About the Museum:
The Maine Jewish Museum is housed within the restored Etz Chaim Synagogue, a turn-of-the-century house of worship. It has one of only two public gardens in the Eastern Prom area — many people come to admire our stunning blooms and flowering trees in season. Our twin missions are to celebrate and honor the contributions and diversity of Maine’s Jewish community in the context of American history and, through exhibits and programs, to build bridges of appreciation and understanding among people of all backgrounds.
In addition to our permanent historic exhibits and live programming, the Museum is a venue for rotating contemporary art exhibits featuring established, Jewish-connected, and Maine-connected artists. Almost all of the art on exhibit is for sale and the proceeds benefit both the artists and the Museum. We also have a wonderful Museum gift shop filled with Judaica, jewelry, and everyday and decorative items crafted by local artists.
The Museum is open Sunday to Friday from noon to 4 PM (from Memorial Day through Labor Day, our hours are 11 AM – 4 PM). We believe “museums are for kids” and have a dedicated Kids Korner on our second floor for budding artists to craft and create. We also love to host weddings, parties, and corporate events!
